What Does Our Name Mean?

Indelible Grace means "grace that cannot be erased."  It comes from an old hymn called "A Debtor to Mercy Alone."  The third verse goes:

My name from the palms of his hands,
Eternity will not erase.
Impressed on his heart it remains,
in marks of indelible grace.

The song evokes a passage from the prophet Isaiah.  The people were crying out to God: Have you forsaken us?  Have you forgotten us?  God's response is breathtaking in its audacity: "Can a woman forget her nursing child?  Even if it is possible for her to forget such a thing, I will never forget you.  See, as evidence, as I have engraved you on the palms of my hands." (Isaiah 49:14-16)  To Isaiah's contemporaries, it must have been a puzzling statement.  How could this be?

Years later, Jesus, the God-man, was nailed to the cross, redeeming humanity from sin and death.  After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared before his disciples, and as proof of the Resurrection, he showed them the indelible nail marks on his hands (Luke 24:39, John 20:27).  The fact that the marks on Jesus' hands remain on his resurrection body is a testament forever of God's indelible grace to us.
